New garage door installation
For most Colorado Springs homes I'd buy an insulated steel door with a thicker skin. It handles cold and small hail better than a thin builder door and costs far less than wood.

When to replace instead of repair
- Several sections are dented or cracked, from hail or a car.
- The panels you need are no longer made.
- Wood sections are rotting or splitting at the bottom.
- The garage is attached, the door is uninsulated, and the room above it is cold all winter.
- Repairs keep adding up on a door that is 20 or more years old.
Materials for this climate
Steel is what most homes here have. The thickness of the skin matters for hail: a thicker gauge dents less. Insulated steel doors add a foam core and a second skin on the inside, which makes the door stiffer and warmer.
Wood looks good and costs the most. It needs refinishing in the high-altitude sun and splits where hail hits it.
Composite and wood-look steel give the wood look with less upkeep. Steel with a printed wood grain is the budget version.
Aluminum and glass doors suit modern houses but dent and conduct cold easily. I wouldn't put one on an attached garage with a room above it.

What to ask before you buy
- What is the steel thickness, and is the door insulated with polyurethane or polystyrene?
- What R-value does the manufacturer list? How much insulation helps.
- Are new springs sized for the new door's weight included?
- Does the price include removing and hauling away the old door?
- Will the existing opener lift the new door, or does it need replacing too?
- What warranty covers the door and the labor, and is it in writing?
Common questions
How much does a new garage door cost in Colorado Springs?
This Old House lists a typical single door at $1,151 to $1,869 installed and a two-car door at $2,186 to $3,348 (March 2026). Insulation and windows add to that.
What garage door holds up best to hail?
A thicker steel door with an insulated core resists dents better than a thin single-layer door. No steel door is fully dent-proof in large hail.
Do I need a new opener with a new door?
Not always. If the new door is much heavier, or the opener is old and lacks safety features, it is a good time to replace both.
